Gold & Mundane Items: Purchasing and Selling

Characters can buy basic, mundane items (such as armor, weapons, and adventuring gear) that are listed in the Player’s Handbook (PHB) for the price listed in the PHB. This only needs to be logged in the character tracking sheet. Characters can also sell these items for half of the price listed in the PHB.

Characters can also buy and sell mundane items in a DM’s world, through trp and live sessions. Any gold found within a world can only be spent in that world, unless it is given as player loot for a session. Gold and mundane items gained within a world (not recorded as official session loot) is exclusive to that world and is considered homebrew elsewhere.

Mundane items and gold may also be granted as rewards for live sessions. Items and gold gained in this way can be used anywhere and must be logged on the character tracking sheet and by the DM in the trade log.

Magic Items

Magic items may be received in live sessions as rewards up to the gold value of the session loot and chosen from The Starry Shore Shopping List. Magic items received as live session loot may be used server-wide, but some DMs have restrictions in their worlds. Magic items may only be received and used by characters of the same or higher tier.

Server-wide allowed magic items can be found in the:
🛒 2014 Shopping Guide
Any item not on the shopping list is not allowed in The Starry Shore and is therefore considered homebrew within the server.

Notes about items

  • Some powerful items have had their properties altered. These altered properties can be found in their listing in The Starry Shore Shopping List.
  • Characters may only use the manuals & tomes that boost ability scores once.
  • Any item that has a recharge time longer than 30 Days is no longer rechargeable but is considered a consumable instead.
  • Rules for poisons: You can use injury poisons to coat one slashing or piercing weapon or up to three pieces of ammunition. Applying the poison takes an action. Once applied, the poison retains potency for 1 minute before drying.

If you do not have proficiency with poisoner's kit, you risk exposing yourself to it's effects when handling/applying.

Shopping: Purchasing Magic Items (via Live Sessions or TRP)

DMs may permit players to discover shops within their worlds, either during live sessions or through text-based roleplay (TRP), and purchase items from these lists found in other tabs. In these shops, players can purchase magical and mundane items.

Shops are permitted to charge more than the cost in the shopping list but cannot charge less. DMs retain full discretion over the availability of items, including what items are available and in what quantities. If the items are not listed in the shopping list, they will be considered homebrew within The Starry Shore.

For players seeking to purchase items, there are two methods:
  1. During a live session, if the DM allows it, players can submit a list of items they wish to purchase. To find the price of these items, check here:
    🛒 2014 Shopping Guide
  2. Through TRP shops in the market district category or any other shops within TRP worlds, as well as VIP buildings. Players engage in TRP interactions to procure items and then send the list to the DM.

P.S. the-starry-store-2nd-best-shop is ideal for quick item pickups, no TRP necessary. Slow mode is activated within the shop, so if your list isn’t logged yet, just update it instead of posting multiple entries.

DMs must post magic-item-log entries for characters who purchase magic items in their sessions.

Selling Magic Items (via Live Sessions or TRP)

Selling an item at 50% of its base gold value is free and does not require a check. It must be logged by a DM in the magic-item-log or players can post it in the-starry-store-2nd-best-shop .

Selling an item at 100% of its base gold value requires a check and costs DTP.

Check: Charisma (Persuasion)
Persuasion Check DC = Item's Tier × 5
DTP Cost = Item's Tier × 5

Buffs on the selling roll in live sessions are the same as crafting ones. See downtime-rolls .

Character Trading

Characters can buy and sell items to other characters as they wish. Characters can also gift items to other characters.

It can be roleplayed in some fashion and must be logged in the character-trade-log .

Note: Since session required items are not tradable bcz they have a story for the character that earned it. Items that requires you to spend downtime points to awaken/exalt them are also not tradeable.

Sending Stone System

Every character is gifted a sending stone upon their arrival to The Starry Shore. Sending stones can be linked to the sending stone of any other Starry Shore resident that you have met.

Sending Stones use a "Contacts" system in place of needing to carry a half dozen or more stones. This way, a character in The Starry Shore only needs to physically carry a single sending stone. Make sure to gain the consent of the player whose character contact you wish to store.

Session Required items

Some of the items require a session to obtain, due to their lore and power (“session required” in the shop). However, a character must still pay the gold cost to obtain the item.

  • A maximum of one session-required item can be obtained per session.
  • Only one player may receive a session-required item per session.
  • Example: if 2 characters need the same item, they still need 2 sessions to do so.
  • This applies whether the item is bought or crafted, and it cannot be traded.
  • Session-required items cannot be traded.
  • The session has to be the item's tier and the lowest tier to join the session can be 1 tier lower, proxies allowed.

These items are unique and important, and should be personalized and significant to the character gaining them. To keep it that way, the session needs to be tailored around the character gaining it through exploration, combat, or solving puzzles, making it more rewarding and immersive for the player.

DMPC SRI Sessions

Once per week, DMs may obtain a Session-Required Item (SRI) for their own character by hosting a session (excluding artifacts).

To fit the narrative, the session's plot must focus directly on searching for and securing this item. The DM's character can ask a group of other characters to find a specific item.

The DM must then post in the-starry-store-2nd-best-shop with the link to the session log.

This session does not reward karma for hosting an SRI session.

Artifacts

  • The player may request the beneficial properties of artifacts, and ultimately the DM of the session will determine the item’s beneficial and detrimental properties. The same properties may not be granted twice on a given item.
  • Artifacts' Save DCs: Replace fixed DCs (e.g., 17 or 18) with:
    • Spellcasting DC, if the wielder has one
    • If they don't: Constitution Mod + 8 + Proficiency Bonus
  • DMs may choose to rename the item, but both names must be logged.
  • Artifacts are limited to one per character except if prestige points have been used to purchase a second artifact slot.
    • To change artifacts, a character must first destroy their current artifact in a session, then acquire a new one in another session.
    • You can rent a 3rd artifact slot, check out:
      🕒 2014 DTP Guide
    • All of these items must be logged in artifact-and-boon-purchase-log

Custom Artifacts

How does it work?

  • You get a certain amount of Artifact Points (AP) based on how much gold you spend on your artifact.
  • Each ability of the artifacts is individually priced and can be bought to build your Custom Artifact. A few abilities were adjusted or generalized.
  • The base form of the artifact can be a weapon, a shield, armor, or any wondrous item (it must be a physical object).
  • There are limitations on specific categories where only one can be bought per artifact: Crit Range, Enchantment Bonus, and Extra DMG.
  • The same property can not be chosen more than once.

Prices & Artifact Points (AP)

30 Million GP ➔ 30 AP
20 Million GP ➔ 20 AP
10 Million GP ➔ 10 AP
Note: Players may count artifact parts (such as Dragon Masks and Orrery pieces) toward the total amount paid if a property that requires those parts is chosen.
Example: If you have the 5 Dragon Masks, the total for a 30 AP artifact would be 22.5 million GP.

Major and Minor Beneficial & Detrimental Properties

  • 30 AP: You can buy up to 3 major and 3 minor beneficials, and you must take 2 major and 2 minor detrimentals.
  • 20 AP: You can buy up to 2 major and 2 minor beneficials, and you must take 1 major and 1 minor detrimental.
  • 10 AP: You can buy up to 1 major and 1 minor beneficial, and you must take 1 minor detrimental.

Notes

  • You can buy up to 2 custom artifacts.
  • When a DM does not allow Custom Artifacts, you can use an artifact of the same price or lower than the custom one.
  • Extra Damage Notes:
    • If your Artifact is a weapon, the extra damage is applied to damage rolls made with your artifact.
    • If your Artifact is a Wondrous Item, the extra damage is applied to your unarmed strikes.
    • Extra damage for unarmed strikes does not stack with extra damage properties of other artifacts.
    • Extra damage does not apply to spells, except for the "Extra Spell DMG" property.
  • (Optional) It's recommended to write a short paragraph about the artifact flavor/lore in the properties thread.

Upgrades & Modifications

Custom Artifact Upgrades:
If you buy the 10 or 20 AP custom artifact, you can upgrade to higher AP points later by paying the gold difference and a 5% fee of the total custom artifact cost. This option can only add more abilities, not change the previously selected ones, and it requires a session as usual.

Custom Artifact Property Changes:
If you want to change your AP choices without losing your gold, you can use 2 respecs to change the artifact property choices only, aka redistribute your AP (also session required).

Notes:

  • The only things you can change in a character respec are beneficials and detrimentals.
  • Removing a discounted Artifact Property revokes the discount. You must pay the GP difference equal to the initial discount applied

Upgrading Your Normal Artifact:
If you already have an artifact and you want to upgrade it to a custom one, you can use the following system
(this will only last until the end of this September):

  • Base fee: 1 million GP
  • The amount you paid for the normal artifact you're upgrading from is deducted from the custom artifact total.
  • A 10% GP upgrade fee of the amount you paid for the normal artifact you're upgrading from.
  • Open a staff ticket or contact any of the staff for your artifact upgrade.
Example: Crown of Lies (10 million GP base) upgrade cost to 30 AP Custom Artifact (30 million GP value):

1,000,000 GP (Base Fee)
+ 20,000,000 GP (Cost Difference: 30M - 10M)
+ 1,000,000 GP (10% Fee of original 10M)
───────────────────────────────
= 22,000,000 GP Total Upgrade Cost
By purchasing a Custom Artifact, you agree to the terms and conditions (including future patches).

Boons

Characters may purchase from a limited selection of Epic Boons as detailed in our shop for the gold listed. Characters must meet the listed tier requirements.

To purchase a boon, post in artifact-and-boon-purchase-log using the provided template. A staff member must approve this purchase.

Rule: A character may only have a maximum of three boons (excluding Obojima boon), except if you buy a prestige boon slot. Boons belong to the character, not the player, and cannot be transferred to another character.
P.S. To replace an existing boon, you must purchase the new one at its full cost. The previous boon is discarded and cannot be reclaimed unless you purchase it again.
